Payments via Polar for EDD · merchant of record

Let Polar handle the tax. Keep your Easy Digital Downloads store.

Polar becomes the seller of record for each payment, so it works out, collects and remits sales tax and VAT. Your downloads, orders and customers stay in Easy Digital Downloads, and an order completes only when Polar collected exactly its total. One-time payments for now.

Why it matters

Selling abroad means tax in every country you sell to.

A card processor collects the payment, but registering for and filing sales tax and VAT stays your job. A merchant of record is legally the seller, so the tax is its job.

"Stripe doesn't automatically take care of it for you because it's not a Merchant of Record."

"I gave up on a marketplace-style side-project because the tax stuff was going to be a major part of running the business."

How it works

Paid means paid, to the cent.

Polar charges the EDD order total, so EDD's discounts and fees carry through. The order completes only when Polar collected exactly that total, in its currency; any other amount puts it on hold with a note.

  1. 1

    Connect Polar

Paste an access token for your live and sandbox organizations. With the right token scope, Set up in Polar adds the webhook and saves its secret.

  2. 2

    Try it in test mode

EDD's test mode uses your Polar sandbox, with its own token and webhook secret. Take a test purchase with one of Polar's test cards.

  3. 3

    Go live

Turn off EDD's own taxes, since Polar works them out, tick Polar under Active Gateways, and switch test mode off.

Built for real stores

Checked at every step.

Confirmed before the receipt shows

The confirmation page asks Polar about the payment, so a shopper who has just paid sees their receipt and files even before Polar's webhook arrives. A check 15 minutes later completes anything both missed.

Refunds both ways

Refund an order in EDD with "Refund in Polar" ticked and the money goes back through Polar. Refund in Polar's dashboard and EDD records it, for the whole order or one item.

Named on Polar's page

A download bought on its own shows under its own name on Polar's checkout and receipt. A cart of several uses one shared product. You don't create anything in Polar yourself.

Live and sandbox, side by side

Separate live and sandbox credentials, picked by EDD's test mode. The Status line says what, if anything, keeps Polar off the checkout, and the Webhook line shows when Polar last reached your site.

Pricing

Pay for the sites you run.

Every plan has every feature. Local copies on localhost, .test or .local don't use a site.

Questions

Do I need to create products in Polar?

No. The first time a download sells on its own, the plugin creates a private Polar product named after it and its price option. A cart of several downloads uses one shared product. Every checkout sets the price to the EDD order total, so prices are never copied to Polar.

Can shoppers pay without leaving my store?

Yes, with Embedded checkout on, Polar's checkout opens in a window over your checkout page. Add your site's address in each Polar organization under Settings › Preferences › Embedding first; until then, shoppers go to Polar's page as usual.

Does it work with EDD subscriptions?

Not yet. This version takes one-time payments. EDD Recurring Payments support is next.

What if Polar charges a different amount?

The order is put on hold, not completed, with a note giving both amounts. Check the payment in Polar before giving access.

Where do I enter my license key?

In Downloads › Settings › Payments › Polar, in the License field. It's activated when you save the settings.
