# Licensed products

> Turn a WooCommerce product into licensed software, set its site limit, terms and release.

Tick **Licensed** at the top of a product's data box: each purchase then issues a license key. Fill in the **Licensing** tab:

**1** License works for. **2** Updates and support for. **3** Latest version. The table below explains every field.

| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Sites per license | How many sites one key can be active on at the same time, or unlimited. |
| License works for | Counted from the day the order is paid. 0 means it never expires. |
| Updates and support for | After this the key keeps working but gets no new versions. 0 means updates never stop. |
| Keys | Generate a new key for each sale, or hand out keys you import in the License Center. |
| Latest version | Sites running an older version are offered the update. Change it when you upload a new zip. |
| Rollout (%) | Offer the latest version to this share of sites first. See [Beta channel and staged rollouts](/docs/license-manager/beta-and-rollouts/). |
| Requires WordPress, Tested up to, Requires PHP | Shown in WordPress's "View details". For Tested up to, enter the branch, such as 7.1: it counts for every 7.1.x release. |
| Changelog | Shown to site owners with the update. |
| Beta version, Beta file | Offered only to sites that ask for the beta channel. |

The update file is the first `.zip` under the product's **Downloadable files**, the same one buyers download. When you save the product, Sell Your Plugins reads the version inside that zip: it fills in **Latest version** when that's empty, and warns when the two differ. The product's image is the icon WordPress shows next to the update.

## Variations

Each variation uses the product's licensing settings unless it sets its own under **Variations**: whether it issues keys, **Sites per license (0 = unlimited)**, how long the license works and how long updates last. A 1-site, 5-site and unlimited plan can be three variations of one product. Each purchase issues one key per unit bought. A variation's sites download the first `.zip` under that variation's **Downloadable files**, or the product's when it has none.

## Licenses made by hand

**Create licenses**, under **WooCommerce › Licenses**, makes keys for a customer without an order: for a support case, a reviewer or a plan change. Each key gets the product's (or variation's) **Updates and support for** period, as a sale does. To give more, change the date in the license's panel.

## Installs by version

A product's Licensing tab shows how many sites run each version, and each license's panel shows what each of its sites runs.
